Bay Leaf

Laurus nobilis

Bay laurel is a sacred herb in Hellenic tradition. It was used to crown victors in certain contests and is still used to symbolize high achievement (example: a "Nobel laureate").

It is said that the Oracle at Delphi chewed bay laurel leaves to increase her ability to prophecy.

Bay leaves release their flavor and energy gradually and should be added to soups and stews early in cooking time. It is great added to rich meaty dishes.

Whoever finds the bay leaf on their plate should make a wish.

Bay leaves can be placed in cupboards to repel ants.

Bay leaves are very tough and do not digest well. It is best to remove it from your dish after cooking, before serving.
