Strawberries have been cultivated in the Americas since prehistory and were a sensation in Europe when they appeared on the scene in the 1600s. Wild strawberries existed in Europe before then, but they were small and frequently ignored.
Elves love strawberries. In Bavaria, baskets of strawberries may be tied to cows horns as an offering to the elves to ensure their good will.
Lovely heart-shaped berries are best eaten in the late spring when they are fresh and harvested locally. They are susceptible to mold and don't keep well in their natural form. They do freeze well, however, and make wonderful preserves.
A strawberry leaf may be carried for good luck.

Choose organic strawberries if you have, as conventionally grown strawberries can be very heavily doused with pesticides compared with some other crops. Luckily, they are quite easy to grow at home, but their season is limited.
